Gifted & Talented

Identification of Gifted and Talented Students

‘Gifted’ learners are those who have abilities in one or more subjects in the statutory curriculum other than art and design, music, PE and performing arts.

‘Talented’ learners are those who have abilities in art and design, music, PE or performing arts such as dance and drama.

Students who are gifted or talented in a subject will be identified by their teachers and this information is recorded centrally to ensure appropriate provision is made for students in lessons.

We also hold a whole College Gifted and Talented Student Register which lists those students with exceptional academic potential which equates to around 10% of students in each year group.  These are identified primarily through the results of external examinations such as KS2 National Curriculum tests and MIDYIS tests in which a student with a score of 121 + will be deemed gifted and talented.  We also consider subject leaders assessments.

Provision for Gifted and Talented Students in Lessons

We believe that all students need to receive an appropriate level of stretch and challenge in their lessons and of course this is particularly important for gifted and talented students.  Strategies for providing this challenge in lessons include differentiation, provision of extension activities and development of Leadership and Independent.

Through our broad curriculum we are able to offer a number of options to able students including additional qualifications and early entry GCSEs.  Details of these can be found in the Department information sections.

Extra Curricular Provision for Gifted and Talented Students

We are fortunate to be able to offer a variety of additional opportunities for gifted and talented students outside of lessons.  These include after College enrichment sessions (please click on the link on the left hand side to view the enrichment opportunities for the current term), trips, external visitors, competitions, productions and access to holiday schools.  We also provide aid with Oxbridge applications in the Sixth Form which have proven to be successful over the years.

Over the last year we have been working with Wellington College in Crowthorne and The University of Surrey in Guildford to provide opportunities for our G & T students. These have ranged from Careers advice to subject specific days.
