Information Technology

Information Technology is a practical and applied subject that equips students with essential digital skills for the modern world. This course focuses on how IT systems are used in business and society, combining technical knowledge with hands-on experience in areas such as cybersecurity, databases, and web development. What will you study?

Students follow the Edexcel/Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate specification, which includes:

  • Unit 1: Information Technology Systems – understanding the role of IT in business and society, including hardware, software, and ethical issues
  • Unit 2: Creating Systems to Manage Information – relational database development and management
  • Unit 3: Using Social Media in Business – planning and implementing social media strategies
  • Unit 4: Website Development – designing, building, and testing websites for specific audiences and purposes
Assessment

Assessment is a combination of external and internal components:

  • Units 1 and 2: Externally assessed exams
  • Units 3 and 4: Internally assessed coursework

The course is equivalent to one A Level and is completed over two years.

Entry requirements

To study Information Technology, students should have:

  • A minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade 9–4 (or equivalent), including English and Mathematics
  • If taken, a Merit or above in OCR Nationals or a Grade 4 in GCSE Computing
