Our Applied Human Biology course is designed to provide students with a deep understanding of biological principles in real-world contexts. It is ideal for students interested in health, medicine, and the human body, offering a practical and applied approach to learning. What will you study?

Students follow the Edexcel/Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate specification, which includes:

• Unit 1: Human biology and physiological systems, including the structure and function of cells, tissues, and organs
• Unit 2: Practical scientific procedures and techniques, with a focus on microbiology and laboratory skills
• Coursework: Research-based assignments on topics such as the effects of antimicrobial agents and health monitoring
• Optional topics: May include additional units related to health and disease, depending on the cohort and delivery

Assessment

Assessment is through a combination of external examinations and internally assessed coursework. Two units are externally examined, while two are assessed through project work completed in college. All assignments must be completed within set deadlines and passed to achieve the qualification.

Entry requirements

To study Applied Human Biology at Sixth Form, students should have:

• A minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade 9–5 (or equivalent)
• A Grade 5-5 in Combined Science, or a Grade 5 in Triple Biology or Chemistry
• Alternatively, a Merit in BTEC GCSE Applied Science
