Diversity

At Collingwood, diversity enriches our learning environment and inclusion is essential to the wellbeing and success of all students and staff.

We work actively to embed equity, diversity, and inclusion into every aspect of College life. A dedicated diversity working group of students and staff meets regularly to plan initiatives, raise awareness, and ensure that our approach reflects the voices and experiences of our community. Recent priorities have included promoting racial and ethnic diversity and addressing discrimination based on gender and sexual identity.

Our curriculum plays a key role in this work. Subject leaders have reviewed and enhanced their schemes of learning to reflect a broader range of perspectives and experiences. In addition, themes of diversity and inclusion are woven into our PSHE programme, assemblies, and tutor time activities, helping students to develop empathy, understanding, and respect for others.

We are also committed to tackling discriminatory language and behaviour. Students are encouraged to report any incidents, and staff receive ongoing training to support inclusive classroom practice. A dedicated reporting system ensures that concerns are addressed promptly and appropriately.

Throughout the year, we celebrate the diversity of our community through events such as Black History Month, Diversity Week, and Pride Month. These events include assemblies, guest speakers, student-led projects, and cultural celebrations that highlight the richness of our College community and promote a message of unity and respect.

At Collingwood, diversity is celebrated. We continue to listen, learn, and take action to ensure that every student feels seen, heard, and valued.

Public Sector Equality Duty

In line with the Public Sector Equality Duty (PSED) under the Equality Act 2010, we are committed to promoting a culture where everyone - students, staff, and visitors - feels respected, supported, and empowered to thrive.

Our equality objectives reflect our ongoing dedication to:

  • Eliminating discrimination, harassment, and victimisation;
  • Advancing equality of opportunity for all, regardless of background or identity;
  • Fostering good relations between people from different communities and perspectives.

These objectives guide our policies, shape our practices, and inspire initiatives that make Collingwood a welcoming and inclusive place for all. Our objectives are as follows:

1 For students and staff to always promote a culture of respect, under the value of inclusiveness, within our College community, and to promote a feeling of safety for all.

2 To ensure consistent recording, reporting and sanctions by staff following incidents of discriminatory language and behaviour.

3 To improve the progress and attainment for specified sub-groups.

4 To promote cultural understanding and awareness of the British education system for staff, students and parents from overseas.
