Mental health support

Our students are supported not just academically, but personally and emotionally too. We understand that good mental health is essential for students to thrive, and we are deeply committed to creating an environment where wellbeing is prioritised and every individual feels valued.

Our approach to mental health is proactive, inclusive, and embedded in daily college life. From trained staff who are approachable and attentive, to a strong sense of community that encourages openness and mutual support, we work hard to ensure that students feel safe, heard, and empowered.

This page offers an overview of how we foster a culture of care—one where mental health is recognised, respected, and supported at every stage of the student journey.

On-site support from the Surrey Mental Health Support Team

We are fortunate to have the Surrey Mental Health Support Team (SMHST) based on site. This dedicated team of professionals works closely with our staff to provide expert mental health support directly to students who need it. Their work complements our internal pastoral care and ensures that students have access to a wide range of support options, right here on campus.

Whether a student is experiencing anxiety, low mood, or simply needs someone to talk to, the SMHST offers a safe, confidential space to explore those feelings and access practical strategies for managing them. Their presence in College means that support is not only accessible, but also familiar and integrated into daily life.

How we support student mental health

We take a proactive and inclusive approach to student mental health, ensuring that support is woven into the fabric of College life. Our initiatives are designed to raise awareness, build resilience, and provide timely, targeted help when needed.

Assemblies and awareness

Students regularly take part in assemblies focused on mental health and wellbeing, including sessions tailored to exam stress. These are often supported by external professionals from the Surrey Mental Health Support Team, helping to normalise conversations around mental health and encourage students to seek help when needed.

Accessible resources and signposting

We ensure students know where and how to access support. Mental health resources are available online and clear signposting is displayed around the College. These are reinforced through PSHE lessons and tutor time, making it easy for students to find the right help at the right time.

Early identification and personalised support

Our pastoral team uses a vulnerability map and early screening tools to identify students who may need additional support. Referrals are followed up with direct feedback and signposting to appropriate services, ensuring that no student falls through the gaps.

A curriculum that supports wellbeing

Mental health education is embedded across the curriculum, particularly through PSHE. Topics are carefully sequenced to be age-appropriate and relevant, and students also receive digital resilience training to help them navigate the online world safely and confidently.

Student voice and leadership

We actively listen to our students. Mental health is a regular focus in student voice activities and surveys, and feedback is shared through our “You said, we did” approach. Student leaders are assigned to each year group to help gather and share views, ensuring that every student feels heard.
