Governors
Governors (trustees) are dedicated volunteers who play a vital role in shaping the strategic direction, financial health, and educational vision of the College. As part of the governing board, governors are responsible for ensuring that the College delivers a high-quality education, complies with legal and regulatory requirements, and remains accountable to our community.
Governors provide both support and challenge to school leaders, helping to drive improvement and secure the best possible outcomes for all learners.
The role of governors
Governors are not involved in the day-to-day operations of the school. Instead, they focus on:
- Strategic oversight: Setting the long-term vision and priorities for the College
- Accountability: Monitoring educational outcomes and holding College leaders to account for performance
- Financial stewardship: Approving budgets and ensuring public funds are used effectively
- Compliance: Ensuring the College meets its statutory obligations and adheres to policies and procedures
Governors work as a collective body, making decisions through discussion and consensus. They are expected to act in the best interests of the College and its students, and to maintain confidentiality and integrity in all aspects of their work.
Skills and attributes
Effective governors come from a wide range of backgrounds and bring diverse perspectives to the governing board. While no specific qualifications are required, governors should be:
- Able to commit time to attend governing board meetings and relevant training
- Willing to engage with complex information and contribute to informed decision-making
- Interested in education and committed to improving outcomes for children and young people
- Capable of thinking strategically and working collaboratively
- Respectful of confidentiality and collective responsibility
Training and support are available to help governors understand their responsibilities and develop their governance skills.
