Graphic Communication

Graphic Communication is a creative and practical subject that focuses on visual problem-solving and design. Students explore a wide range of techniques and processes, from traditional drawing to digital design, while developing their own personal style. What will you study?

Students follow the AQA A Level Graphic Communication specification, which includes:

  • Year 1: Skills-based portfolio development through a series of short and extended projects exploring different media, techniques, and design approaches
  • Component 1: Personal investigation – an in-depth design project based on a theme of the student’s choice, including a written element (60% of A Level)
  • Component 2: Externally set assignment – a design brief set by the exam board, developed over several months and completed with a final piece in a timed exam (40% of A Level)
Assessment

Assessment is entirely practical and based on the quality of the portfolio and final outcomes:

  • Component 1: Personal investigation – internally assessed, externally moderated (60%)
  • Component 2: Externally set assignment – internally assessed, externally moderated (40%)

Students receive ongoing verbal and written feedback throughout the course.

Entry requirements

To study Graphic Communication, students should have:

  • A minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade 9–4 (or equivalent)
  • Ideally, a Grade 4 or above in GCSE Art & Design, BTEC Art, or a Level 2 Pass in Creative iMedia
  • A strong interest in design and the ability to work independently
